The Dead Kingdom Chapter One Preview

Hi all,

The final book in the Curse of Anubis will be released in April this year. If you don’t want any spoilers, I would recommend skipping this blog post. Without further ado, here is chapter one:

Chapter One

"I just don't understand why we had to go so far to rescue that... monstrosity."

Tahira looks up and glares at the girl who has spoken, Shyvonne, she thinks her name was. She's someone that Darrus and the others had met while she was trapped.

I don't think I'm going to get along with her.

"Just shut up, Von," Darrus instantly jumps to her defence. "Make yourself useful and keep an eye on the door."

"Any reason why one of the other several people in here can't do that?"

"Because you're the one causing drama. You've seen what's happened outside. We don't have time for petty bullying."

Bastet twitches in her arms, laying a paw across her leg. "I'm finding this one to be less and less annoying."

Tahira strokes her soft fur, trying not to think about the cure those doctors made from her blood. Cee, one of the other mummies, had become immune to the cure. In fact, it only made them stronger and angrier. Now they're rampaging outside, in a tiny little town with walls built up around it.

And I can't control any of them.

Due to her being cured, she can control mummies. Tell them what to do, who not to infect. But the ones created by this cure, she has no effect on them. She's essentially like everyone else in their group now, an item on the menu.

"So, what do we do then, Russ?" Fawn jumps off their bed and wanders into the centre of the room. "It was your idea to rescue the baby. I think we should chuck her out there and run while they're distracted."

Darrus stands up, his hands balled into fists. "Enough. We wait until the carnage has died down and see what our options are."

"I agree with Fawn," Shyvonne interjects. "Chuck the freak of nature out."

Bastet growls and wriggles, so Tahira tickles her behind the ears. "Ignore them. They're just jealous."

Pointedly, she looks up at them. Both are glaring at her with their jaws set. Shyvonne curls her lip and turns around, shooting Darrus a pleading glance.

Dallas surprises her by sitting down next to her. "Is Bastet okay? How is her leg?"

Tahira smiles. "She's fine. Probably just a bit annoyed with all the noise outside."

"Can I hold her?"

Bastet looks up at her with her golden eyes. "Let him. I do owe him for helping me find you."

"Sure."

Dallas' eyes light up, and he gently plucks the smoke-coloured cat off her lap. With one hand under her stomach, he uses the other to scratch her behind the ears, eliciting genuine purrs from Bastet.

Who knew a goddess would act so much like a regular cat?

"I hate to interrupt." Another girl stands up; she thinks her name is Ivory. "But we do need a plan. We have no supplies in here, apart from a few snacks. We'll need to go out at some point."

"And we will," Darrus says before anyone else can open their mouth. "Just give me a minute to think."

He gingerly wanders over to Tahira and sits on the empty spot on the bed. The two of them look at each other awkwardly, neither really knowing what to say. Tahira has been able to gather that he was in a relationship with Shyvonne. The thought makes her stomach churn with jealousy. It makes her angry that while she was suffering, he was having fun with another girl—one with a bad attitude, like Fawn.

"Are you okay?" she finally asks.

"Yeah. I'm more worried about you."

She ignores the dull ache in her muscles. "I guess I've been better."

He opens his mouth to say something, then ducks his head. "I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"Not trying harder. I gave up looking, and I shouldn't have. I'm so sorry."

From the way his voice cracks, she’s certain he means it. Still, it doesn't erase the weeks where she was strapped to a gurney. Alone—apart from three mummies who wanted nothing to do with her. Her gaze flits down to Bastet.

But she left me too.

When she's alone, she'll ask the cat goddess what happened. She expected Bastet to come and rescue her almost immediately, even if Darrus couldn't. Instead, everyone left her there to rot.

"Tahira?"

His voice snaps her out of her thoughts. "Sorry. I'm just tired."

"After you've done absolutely nothing for weeks on end?" Fawn snorts. "I think you're just lazy."

"Why don't you fuck off and find someone else to be an asshole to?" Her tone comes out more aggressive than she would have liked, though seeing the flash of surprise on Fawn's face is priceless.

"I think you need to go outside and die. Like you were always supposed to."

"And anyone else who is cured?"

"No. Just you. You're a monster. Half mummy? That's unnatural." Fawn rolls their eyes with a scoff.

Tahira feels the anger bubble up inside her. "Everyone who gets cured is half—"

A hand is placed over her own, and Darrus shakes his head. "Don't waste your energy arguing with them."

Tahira wants to claw their eyes out, but she forces herself to relax. "So, what is the plan?"

"We wait until the initial carnage dies down. At some point, everyone left will be hiding. Hopefully then we can sneak around and leave."

"You think we can just walk through the gate?" Ivory squeaks as she paces around the room. "We'll be on foot with no food or—"

"Depending on the situation outside, we'll see if we can get some supplies," Darrus says gently. "But there's a chance that there will be too many mummies for us to do that. We have to work with what we've got."

"Chosen one," Bastet meows. "I'll stay with you as you escape. My nose is sharper than yours."

Tahira gives her a silent nod. She doesn't want the others to think she's crazy for talking to a cat.

"Tahira," Darrus slides closer to her, making her heart pound. "Do you want to try and sleep?"

She shakes her head quickly. "No. Anything could happen any second."

His hip is inches away from hers now, and she finds her body overheating. He blinks at her with his brown eyes, full of guilt. "Do you think you can walk?"

"I think so."

"Good." His eyes are back on Shyvonne, who is leaning against a wall with her arms crossed. "Are you listening to what is happening out there?"

"Eddy is," Shyvonne snaps.

The quiet man stands against the door with one ear pressed to it. His unhappy expression tells Tahira he's been eavesdropping on their conversation.

"Don't be surprised," Fawn says. "Now that the zombie is back, he won't pay you any attention."

"I didn't realise that zombies could be so ugly," Shyvonne says with a dry laugh. "Though she was probably like that before the transformation."

"I am right here," Tahira snaps. "I'm not deaf."

Ivory suddenly stands up, moving away from the door. "Do you hear that?"

Everyone goes silent. On the other side of the door, the sound of footsteps can just about be heard. The steps are hard, as if the person is limping.

Bastet wrinkles her nose. "It doesn't sound like a regular human."

Shyvonne lets out a dramatic sigh. "This is ridiculous. We should just throw out—"

"Shh!" Tahira hisses. "There's a mummy behind the door."

Her voice deliberately gets louder with each word. "Then go make friends with it."

There's a loud groan, and then the door starts to shake as it gets pounded on. Shyvonne goes white and backs up against the beds, finally keeping her mouth shut.

"It knows we're in here now," Fawn mutters, deliberately glaring at Shyvonne.

"Quiet," Darrus warns. "That door should—"

The sound of splintering wood fills the air, and everyone freezes. A crack appears in the middle of the door and slowly grows. Dallas moves closer to Tahira, clutching Bastet to his chest.

"Chosen one, this one will attract more!"

Tahira looks at the floor helplessly for a moment. "Grab whatever is here and pack it. That thing will get in and bring more with it."

"That’s our only way out, you stupid cunt!" Shyvonne says. The door buckles from the weight of the mummy. It starts to cave in at the centre, and the sound of growling is louder now.

"Grab your stuff," Darrus orders. "We'll take this one step at a time."

Tahira straightens up as everyone shoves things into backpacks. Her group is packing essentials, such as food and blankets. Shyvonne and Ivory are less experienced with fleeing. They're both packing their belongings rather than things they actually need to survive.

Darrus gently takes her hand to pull her up. "Stay by me, okay?"

"Shouldn't I be the one saying that?" she jokes.

A ghost of a smile appears on his lips. "You can next time."

Her face heats up, so she pretends to adjust her jacket. "Are we going for a vehicle?"

"I think we have to. The people out there who have been cured... can they turn back?"

Tahira shivers as she remembers Cee reanimating. Something about that cure is off; as soon as they are cured, they turn back. Only this time, they're meaner and will kill instead of infecting. All those people outside the walls who have been cured will end up dead, for real this time.

"I don't think so. Still, a vehicle can't hurt if they do turn back."

His eyes survey everyone in the room. "We might need two cars. Our group is a little bigger than when we first met."

Tahira locks eyes with Shyvonne. "Mm-hm."

Even though she expects it, it still surprises her when the wood from the door explodes into pieces and a mummy stumbles in. The first thing she notices is the blue eyes, which means it's a mummy with the wrong cure in its veins. Eddy is the first to react, plucking his baseball bat off the floor and whacking it around the head. The mummy screams and crumples to the floor.

"Dallas, Ivory!" Darrus shouts. "Go first!"

The two youngest members of the group look terrified as they run past the downed mummy. Eddy hits it one more time when it attempts to stand up. Fawn and Shyvonne follow, and then Tahira and Darrus. For one panicked moment, she forgets that Dallas has Bastet, until she hears her meow from ahead.

"They haven't noticed you yet!" she meows. "You only have a few more seconds!"

The stench of rotting flesh and blood fills the air as they make it outside. The town no longer looks like the safe, quaint paradise it had been when she first arrived. Instead, blood covers the pavements, and body parts are scattered around randomly. Torn clothes and various belongings lay on the floor, their owners no longer needing them now that they're a mummy. Most of the windows and doors have been completely smashed in, with mummies wandering in and out.

"They're coming!" Ivory screams.

Gargled screams and groans drown out every other sound as more mummies notice their little group. She doesn't hear Darrus shout at her to move until he's pulling her along. Eddy rushes past them to catch up with Fawn, who looks genuinely terrified. He takes their hand and starts leading them to the left.

"There!" Darrus' shout almost deafens her.

He points toward an abandoned car in front of a house. By the looks of it, someone else had gotten there first but hadn't been able to break in. Two of the doors are wide open, and she can see a backpack on one of the seats. She risks a look over her shoulder and sees a horde of mummies catching up to them, their arms outstretched and covered in blood. Many of their eyes are blue and fixed on her. As they've been newly turned, they can still move quite quickly.

"Help!"

Ivory's scream can just about be heard above the groans of the mummies behind them. Two have grabbed her arms and are pulling her backwards. No-one goes back to help her as teeth sink into her skin and tear at her clothes. Her desperate shouts turn to screams of agony as she’s buried beneath the mass of bodies.

"Get in!" Darrus instructs.

She doesn't realise they've reached the car until Darrus pushes her into the back seat. He climbs in after her, his eyes wide at the number of mummies behind them. Dallas is in next, thrusting Bastet into Tahira's arms and then slamming the door behind him. Shyvonne crashes into the closed door, then darts onto the front, clambering into the driver’s seat.

The horde closes in fast—too fast. Eddy and Fawn barely make it, throwing themselves into the last seat as the door slams behind them. The second the door closes, a mummy throws itself at it.

"Von, drive!" Darrus screams.

His shout snaps her back to reality, and she starts the car. More mummies surround them, and Dallas screams.

"Knock 'em over!" Fawn screeches.

The car doesn't have much momentum at first, but Shyvonne quickly picks up speed. She knocks a couple of mummies out of the way before blasting forward. Their bodies go limp as they fly over the hood and smack onto the concrete behind them.

"Where's Ivory?" she shouts above the screams of the mummies.

Eddy shakes his head, making her punch the wheel. It honks from the blow.

"Concentrate, Von!" Darrus snaps.

"It should have been that stupid zombie! Not her!"

"Shut up and drive!"

Tahira is too distracted by the mummies around her to pay attention to their argument. They claw uselessly at the windows as the car passes. Some lose limbs or get dragged underneath the vehicle.

Bastet slithers onto her lap and curls her tail around one of her wrists. "As long as this one keeps driving, we should be fine."

"Can they get in?" she blurts out.

Dallas glances at her and loops his arm around hers. "Do you think they can?"

Darrus answers for her. "Not at the speed we're going. We should be okay for now."

The cat goddess nudges her hand. "What he said. Take a moment to gather your wits. I have a feeling that the rest of this journey won't be a pleasant one."

Exhausted as she is, there's no way she can rest now. There are too many mummies out there making a racket. She doesn't like hearing the crunch of their bones as they're crushed under the wheels. Or the sound of their blood splattering against the windows.

"I think we're near the entrance!" Shyvonne shouts, picking up more speed.

Tahira looks out the window but sees only mummies and grime. How Shyvonne knows where they are is impossible to guess.

"Watch out!" Darrus leans forward to shout. "There might be—"

He's cut off as the mummies spread out. A figure comes into view, but screams as the car slams into them. Their eyes are wide as they're knocked to the side, and their pupils are visible.

Human.

"Oh my God!" Fawn points behind them. "They were human, you asshole!"

Shyvonne's hands shake. "What?"

"That wasn't a mummy! You just killed someone!"

"Shut up!" Darrus growls. "Keep driving until we're clear. Don't think about anything else!"

Luckily, Shyvonne complies, though her movements are slower. Eventually, the crowd of mummies starts to thin out. The streets they go through are empty, save for the occasional mummy. Tahira finally leans her head back and takes a deep breath.

***

The car ran out of fuel ages ago. Still, no-one has moved or said anything. What Shyvonne has done has finally hit her, and she's now sobbing uncontrollably in the front seat. Even Fawn hasn't come up with any ideas to get Tahira kicked out. This is clearly the first time that Shyvonne has ever killed something, despite her tough demeanour.

"Chosen one," Bastet meows urgently. "We can't stay here forever."

Tahira acknowledges her by brushing her fingers across her cheek. She then leans over to whisper in Darrus' ear: "We're sitting ducks here."

He inhales through his nose. "Fawn, Eddy, see if you can find any supplies. The rest of us will look for another vehicle. Von... sit tight."

As they all awkwardly exit the car, Shyvonne opens her door. "I... I killed somebody, Russ."

Despite his awkwardness, he stops. "It was an accident."

"But I killed them. They're gone."

"There were so many mummies, Von. No-one saw them until it was too late."

Tahira nudges Dallas away as Shyvonne sobs harder. The two of them take in their surroundings. They're on a motorway again, on an exit that is devoid of vehicles. Bastet hasn't said anything about mummies, so she's assuming they're safe.

"I knew that witch was faking it." Bastet suddenly growls with a lash of her tail.

Tahira looks over her shoulder and sees Darrus embracing Shyvonne, who has mysteriously stopped crying. She buries her face in his chest while he stands there, visibly awkward about the whole thing. Despite knowing that Shyvonne is only doing this to prove a point, jealousy still flares up.

"I never liked her," Dallas mutters, making Tahira jump. "I don't know what he saw in her."

"I don't really know either." She forces herself to look away. "I'm glad you're okay though. And you did a really good job of looking after Bastet."

His eyes immediately drift to the floor. "But her leg..."

"I'm sure it was an accident."

"Still, I should have been more careful."

"It wasn't him," Bastet meows. "I have Anubis to thank for that."

The two of them creep across the empty road, their eyes peeled for anything that might move. Although many of the cars they come across are empty, they’re unusable. A couple have flat tyres, others have no fuel, and one has had all the doors removed. She's not sure if this is thanks to the former residents of the town they just left. Eventually they wander back to try going in a different direction.

Darrus clears his throat awkwardly as they approach, no longer hugging Shyvonne. "Find anything?"

"Nothing," Dallas mutters. "We're gonna look this way."

"We need to be quick. The mummies could catch up to us."

"Do you think they'll chase us?"

"I hope not."

Dallas wanders ahead slightly while Darrus drops back to walk beside her. The walk has made her slightly out of breath after being used to being immobile in a gurney for hours on end.

"How are you doing?"

"Very tired," she admits. "I hope we find a car soon so I can sit down."

"If you want, Dallas and I can keep looking while you…"

"No thanks. I don't really want to be stuck with the others."

His eyes shift to the pavement. "I'm sorry. I know Von is a bitch."

"Her attitude isn't your fault."

"It kinda is. If I hadn't slept with her, maybe she wouldn't be like this."

Despite her best judgement, Tahira can't help the shiver that sneaks up her spine. The thought of those two together makes her skin crawl. If he had found her sooner, maybe she would have been the one to sleep in his bed. Her cheeks blush at the thought. When she first met him, she didn't think she'd end up liking him. After all he did to her, she thought they would remain at a distance. Now, her heart aches for more.

"I... I don't want you to sleep with her again," she blurts out.

He looks up at her in shock. "No, I won't."

"I really like you, and I want to be with you." Her confidence has disintegrated by the end of her sentence. Her eyes dart to the floor to avoid looking at him.

"I'd like to be with you too, officially, I mean." His hand slips into her own. "I won't let you get used for experiments again."

"I think I've found one!"

Dallas' voice grabs her attention. He's bouncing in front of a small car that only has two doors. Apart from a few scratches, it looks perfectly functional.

Darrus grins. "Have you tried to start it?"

"No, but the keys are already in there."

Darrus drops Tahira’s hand to jog toward it. The door opens with little difficulty, and he climbs inside. A second later, the car starts up with a hum. "Yes!"

Dallas bounces on his heels. "Do you want me to get the others?"

"No." Darrus grunts as he climbs out. "You two get in the back, I'll go find them."

Tahira's aching knees are thankful for a place to sit down. The car’s interior isn't exactly comfortable, as the seats are made from a scratchy material. However, it's much better than standing up.

Bastet moves onto Tahira's lap. "I need to go check on Sekhmet and Mafdet. I won't be gone long."

Tahira mutters a quiet: "Okay."

The grey cat curls up on her lap, her tail wrapped around her face. Within seconds, her breathing slows until she's peacefully asleep. Anxiety fills Tahira at the thought of Bastet leaving her again, but she squashes it down.

She's here now. That's what matters.

The Dead Kingdom Cover Design

Hi all,

It’s time for the cover reveal of the last book in the Curse of Anubis series, The Dead Kingdom. This cover has also been done by the awesome Deranged Doctor Design! This book will be out in April 2026.

As always, I’m going to go through some of the core aspects of the cover design!

  • Bastet and Tahira are once again on the cover, this time with Bastet in a different one of her cat forms.

  • This time they are within the plane of the dead. As this is the last book of the series, I wanted this book cover to take place on a different plane to the others.

  • The pyramid represents one of Ra’s temples, which the main conflict of the book takes part in.

  • The colour scheme for this book is red.

  • This book also has sand on the cover, which has been the same across the whole series.

  • The typography and series branding is the same across all the books.

That’s it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week.

The Frozen Eye now Available on Amazon

Hi all,

The third book in the Curse of Anubis series, The Frozen Eye, is now available on Amazon. You can now purchase it in ebook, paperback and hardcover! Carry on reading below…

Both Eyes can’t be united… but she has no choice.

Tahira has a chance to get the cure in the right hands. The only things standing in the way are hordes of mutated zombies and Anubis’ jackals. But with her goal so close, she’s not prepared to give up yet.

Horus’ Eye has been located but getting it won’t be easy. Bastet must partner with her greatest enemy to get her paws on it. Sekhmet and Mafdet are willing, but only if Ra’s Eye is kept safe.

Keeping both Eyes apart is crucial. Their energy cannot be combined or it will cause chaos in the living world and the afterlife. But, Anubis is desperate for that power and he won’t let Bastet or Tahira stand in the way of him getting it.

That’s it for this week. If you’re enjoying the Curse of Anubis series, let me know! See you next week.

How my Zombies Differ From Other Zombies

Hi all,

With the third book in the Curse of Anubis series coming out soon, I wanted to discuss the zombies in my books and how they differ from more traditional zombies that you might be used to.

The main draw that I think is different is that my zombies are sentient. They can see what they're doing from the world of the dead but they can't control their bodies. They can feel what their body feels, but all of this disappears when they're in the land of the dead. There's no pain, but it's more like a pressure. A sensation that doesn't go away until the wound is healed.

They can be controlled to an extent by certain gods, though this is extremely limited. Anubis, as the god of the dead, is the main one who can do this. As the creator of the plague, he is responsible for everything that happens to every person, turned or not.

I also like the fact that they're called mummies, rather than zombies. It ties them into the Egyptian mythology aspect of the books, which is a huge part of the book.

The mummies have no choice but to wait for their hearts to be consumed by Anubis in order to pass on fully. But when Anubis decides to become the ruler of the gods instead, no hearts are eaten. That means that mummies are left wandering in the real world while the person tries not to look at their real life.

I also loved the idea of the zombies being controlled by someone who was previously zombified. That was one of the first concepts that popped out to me and one that I went along with to the end!

I love reading zombie books but I have found that there are some that don't make their zombies different. While a traditional approach can be good, it can also be boring. When I decided to write about zombies, I didn't want to fall into that category. Hence why my zombies still have a state of awareness and can be controlled by Tahira, the only who has been cured of the virus.

That's it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading. See you next week.

The Frozen Eye Chapter One Preview

Hi all,

This week, it’s finally time for you to read the first chapter of Curse of Anubis #3: The Frozen Eye. This book will be available for pre-order soon, and out in October 2025.

Just as a warning, this post will contain spoilers for the Curse of Anubis series, so please skip this blog post if you don’t want to be spoiled.

Chapter One

Tahira watches in horror as the stumbling horde approaches her. The mummies at the front, the only ones she can see clearly, have a blue tinge in their eyes.

Which means her powers won't work on them.

She wills her mouth open to tell them to leave, to at least try. Maybe the last time this happened it had been a fluke. But nothing comes out. Fear has her frozen.

"D-ie!" one of the mummies screeches as it breaks into a sprint.

Motion kicks back in and she's dashing into the room behind her. As she slams the door, the first few bodies start ramming into it, trying to get to her. She looks down at the handle and sees that it needs a code to get in. Unless they break the door down, which they very well could, she'll be safe.

"What the hell, Tahira?"

Darrus is the leader of the group she's been travelling with. He and his brother are the only ones who are nice to her. Mostly, at least.

"There's mummies out there," she says between pants, her breath hitching in her throat.

He crosses his arms. "And?"

"They're the ones I can't control."

His arms drop immediately. "Seriously?"

"Yes, they have the blue in their eyes."

"Did you try at least?"

"I got scared!"

His sigh comes out irritable. "Maybe you should try."

"If I open the door and it doesn't work, we're dead."

He hooks his backpack over his shoulder. "Fine. Then we need to get out of here some other way."

Thankfully, many of the rooms in the hospital are connected. They only came in here to find out where the compound could be—the one place the mummies haven't taken over. Maybe she should have heeded the warning from the mummy in the cafe. This place is crawling with mummies.

She adjusts her backpack on her shoulder, not having time to worry about how light it is. "We have two options." She points toward the doors on either side of the room. "Both will lead out into the hallway, at some point."

"Then we need to make sure that we have a head start. Do you have everything you need?"

Except for Bastet.

"Yes."

She keeps hoping that any minute now, her backpack will suddenly become heavier, and Bastet will pop out. The goddess has been killed by something and, so far, hasn't come back yet. The last time this happened she was back within a day, but this time it seems like it could be longer.

I need you. Please hurry.

He shrugs. "I guess we'll go left. That way we'll, hopefully, be closer to the stairs when we come out."

Her heart is pounding as he walks towards the other door. She didn’t think to mention the mummies.  When the door squeaks open however, nothing runs out at them. She breathes out a few times before following him inside. This room is slightly darker than the last and is filled with multiple wooden desks with computers sitting on top.

Various documents have been scattered across the floor, along with muddy footprints. She doesn't want to imagine what happened here when the virus started to spread. The virus that Anubis is using to control the mummies. Thankfully, the jackal god isn't here now, but the mummies will be able to tell him where they are soon enough.

Darrus creeps around one of the desks. "Shit. I guess it was just these two rooms that were connected."

"Do we go back?"

From the other room comes the sound of creaking hinges and low growls. With the number of mummies pressing against the door, it won't take them long to break it down.

"Nope. We'll have to make a run for it."

They both move towards the door and try to peer through the tiny slit of glass in the middle. She recognises the grey floor of the hallway but knows that the mummies are only one door away.

"Do you think we'll make it?"

"We have to!" he snaps. "I'm not letting them leave us behind."

"Fine. What's the plan when we get out there?"

"What?"

"We can't just run out there, we need to know what we're doing."

He glares at her like she's a naughty child. "Head for the stairs. Do not go for the lift for any reason. We both need to go as fast as possible."

She swallows her protest. "Fine. I'll go after you."

He doesn't argue with her. He gently pushes the door open a crack. "Ready?"

She nods quickly, feeling her knees wobble. "Yes."

After a second, he dashes out the door, throwing it open. She's barely out when it slams on the wall next to her. In the corner of her eye, she can see the mummies have spotted them and are wrangling themselves out of the crowd. Darrus doesn't slow for her, which she's grateful for. Lumbered feet smack on the floor behind her, filling her ears with a roaring sound. All of them are following them now. Out of one room, they pass a mummy who stumbles out, lazily reaching towards Darrus. He manages to dodge easily, and she darts around it as well.

Darrus reaches the door seconds before she does. The growling of the mummies behind her drowns out the sound of the door opening. He's already halfway down a flight of stairs when she reaches it. She momentarily stumbles over her own feet before launching herself after him.

The stumble gave one mummy enough time to catch up, and it slams her into the wall. She screeches and pushes it away before rushing after Darrus. He's now far ahead of her, having already descended the stairs.

Will he wait for me?

Their relationship has been a hot and cold one. There's a chance he could decide she's not worth it and leave her. Especially since the one thing that made her useful, controlling the mummies, no longer works on all of them. The fear propels her forward, and she practically tumbles down the last few steps, catching herself on the handrail.

A mummy plummets through the handrail beside her, landing with a splat on the floor below. She risks a glance up and instantly wishes she hadn't. There are mummies as far as the eye can see, all on various floors. They're all crowded around the railing, staring down at her with their dark eyes.

"Tahira!"

Darrus' panicked scream kicks her muscles into gear. She's running again, back the way they came towards the entrance. In the middle of the hallway, Darrus is wrestling with a mostly decayed mummy. Its leathery hands have a firm grip on his shoulders. Its teeth chatter as it tries to tear into his flesh.

"Enough! Leave him alone!"

For a moment, she's worried that this mummy is one she can't control, until it releases him. Darrus doesn't hesitate to run, and she follows him a second later. Her heart is pounding so hard it feels like it's going to break through her ribs. Her chest is hot and tight, and she's not sure how much longer she can keep running. The adrenaline boost she got earlier is now completely gone, and she's left to rely on her own energy.

"They have a car!"

The sound of a honking car horn hits her ears when they reach the entrance. Darrus is already running up the hill toward the others, but she's starting to slow.

Run faster, dammit!

Fawn and Eddy, the other members of Darrus' group, will have no qualms about leaving her. Since discovering that she was ‘cured’ of the virus, they've tried every trick in the book to get rid of her. They’ve even suggested killing her.

More growling behind her gives her another speed boost. Darrus has now reached the car, a beat-up red truck. The door pops open and he climbs in, just as mummies emerge from the car park.

There are hundreds behind me now.

If the ones from the hospital have followed her this far, there will be a huge horde behind her. They may not wait.

Fawn sticks their head out the window. "You have five seconds, baby!"

Fawn starts to count, and she gets one last boost of panicked energy. She reaches the door by four seconds and throws it open. Someone grabs her arm and yanks her in, kicking the door closed.

"Drive!" Darrus screams.

The car pulls away before she can sit up. She falls onto Darrus' lap and tries to scramble away, but she's being thrown around too much.

"Are you okay?" Dallas asks, clutching her hand.

"Fine," she mumbles through gritted teeth.

He pulls her forward just as the car hits a speed bump. Her head hits the roof, and she grunts as she sits in a more comfortable position. The car swerves, and they go over another bump, making her float in the air for a second before coming back down. The inside of the car is filthy, with dark stains on the floor that she doesn't want to think about. The seats are old leather and partially torn. Dried stuffing is scattered all around the car, and the front seats have no headrests.

"It's the best one I could find," Dallas mumbles, playing with his fingers.

"You couldn't have found a dirtier one." His brother snorts, nudging a piece of stuffing away with his foot.

"I think it's fine," Tahira says.

"No one cares what you think, baby!" Fawn swings around from the passenger seat. "Now shut up, we're not in the clear yet!"

Tahira looks out of the back window. A sea of mummies is following the car, some in regular clothes while others are in hospital gowns or scrubs. Everything is moving too fast for her to tell whether the ones inside the hospital have followed her out.

I bet they have. Why would they not pursue?

Anubis has probably ordered her dead by now. He'll know where she is thanks to seeing through their eyes. That means that her brother, Seth, will also know soon. Her body shivers at the thought of her twin, who seems to want nothing more than for her death.

She's shaken out of her thoughts when the car lurches and goes over a speed bump. This time however, a sickening squelching sound accompanies it. It dawns on her that they're not going over speed bumps, but rather mummies that are getting sucked underneath the wheels. Their dirty hands paw uselessly at the windshield as they're dragged under. Seeing them disappear so quickly makes her squirm.

"Don't look if you can't handle it," Darrus tells her, a slightly scolding tone in his voice.

"She can't handle it because she doesn't like seeing her own kind get hurt!" Fawn sneers. "Maybe we should put you out there with them."

"You're enjoying this a hell of a lot for someone who claims they're still people," she retorts.

Fawn shakes her head. "They're more human than you ever will be, baby!"

Every time she hears that awful childhood jeer, she wants to punch them in the face. Her anger is boiling, but she holds herself back for Dallas' sake. He shouldn't see her fighting all the time.

Instead, she focuses on Eddy, who is driving. His knuckles are white from gripping the steering wheel so tightly, and each movement he makes is desperate and jerky. She doesn't blame him; visibility is getting difficult with the number of bodies in front of them. With each mummy they hit, the windshield gets dirtier and dirtier, obscuring his view.

"I've got directions to the compound," Darrus blurts out. "It's in Bristol."

"Bristol?" Fawn exclaims. "That's not as far as I thought it would be."

"Once we get out of this mess, we can pull over and discuss it more." He leans forward to tap his friend’s shoulder. "You okay, Eddy?"

The car jerks to the side as a mummy gets pulled underneath. Eddy manages a quick nod before turning his attention back to what's ahead.

Dallas nervously checks the lock on his door. "What if they get in?"

Darrus leans back. "They won't."

"But what if they do?"

"They won't."

Dallas seems to want to argue further, but he clamps his mouth shut. Tahira gives him a small smile before turning her attention back to the window. It's not the fact that she was a mummy that's upsetting her, it's the fact that these people are the ones suffering. Anubis is forcing them to do his bidding, though luckily, they can't feel pain.

"Almost out!" Fawn announces, peering through the last piece of window that isn't covered in muck.

"Thank God for that," Darrus mumbles. "I've had more than enough mummies for one day."

"I'll keep an eye out for somewhere to pull over, Eddy. Just keep driving."

Eddy gives Fawn a nervous glance before nodding. He never really speaks, except to spew insults at her like Fawn does. She doesn't care that he isn't interested in talking to her; she doesn't want to worry about making small talk with anyone else.

After one last bump in the road, the terrain evens out and Eddy speeds up. Fawn gives him a thumbs up, and his shoulders relax slightly.

Fawn hadn't spotted a suitable place to pull over for twenty minutes. They hit two roadblocks and had to backtrack twice, which has only increased the tension in the vehicle.

"This thing won't make it," Fawn snorts, tapping the dashboard. "Not enough petrol."

"There are petrol stations everywhere," he argues. "We'll find one and fill up."

"You don't think people haven't done that already?"

"It's only been a year."

"Exactly! Enough time for assholes to swoop in and take everything they need and more."

"As much as I hate to admit it..." Tahira sighs before continuing. "They have a point. We're not the first ones to come up with the idea of going to a petrol station."

"I don't need you to agree with me, baby!" Fawn hisses.

Instead of an outburst, she settles for a poisonous glare. Fawn doesn't look the least bit fazed, though Eddy does scowl at her.

"Is there any other way we can get petrol?" Dallas asks nervously. "What about from other cars?"

Fawn gives him a look that makes him shrink. "If there's none left in the petrol stations, what makes you think other cars haven't been tapped too?"

"I was just saying—"

"Well, don't. Leave it to the adults to talk."

"You're only seventeen!"

"And? That makes us the eldest! You and baby, keep your traps shut."

"Stop having a go at him just because you're older," Tahira snaps. "Just because you believe you're better doesn't mean you are."

"I'm only better than you, stupid baby!" Fawn leans across the seat to get in her face. "Everyone is. You're just a stupid little freak."

"Fuck off, I've kept you safe!"

"Ooh!" Their voice goes high-pitched and mocking. "Kept us safe? Like we're babies like you? Fuck off!"

She looks to Darrus, but he doesn't seem interested in getting involved. He promised to call Fawn and Eddy out whenever they were horrible to her, but she didn't think that would last long.

Dallas grabs her hand. "Just let them argue amongst themselves, Tahira. Can I see Bastet?"

A lump forms in her throat. How can she tell him? When Bastet comes back, she could come back a different cat. How would she explain that?

"Keep the cat in there for the time being," Darrus seems to have finally found his voice. "You can check on it later, when we find somewhere to rest for the night."

"So, we have no plan?" Fawn scoffs. "We need to get to Bristol!"

"And we will, once we find a way to get there!"

The sound of a car horn beeping in the distance makes her jump. The others also go silent peering out the dirty windows. Dallas tries to wipe away some of the dirt on the inside, but it makes little difference. After a few minutes, there's no other sound, so everyone relaxes.

"Sounds like someone has petrol," Dallas mutters.

"Shut up!" Fawn screeches, rocking the car slightly when they move forward. "I told you that your opinion doesn't matter!"

"And I think you're just enjoying being an asshole!"

"How dare you?"

Fawn prepares to launch themselves into the backseat, but Eddy and Darrus block their way. Dallas is sitting up a little straighter now. Even though she can see the slight fear in his eyes, he's keen to defend himself.

"Enough fighting!" Darrus pushes Fawn back into their seat. "This is getting us absolutely nowhere. We don't need to squabble amongst ourselves, we have enough problems!"

Funny how when everyone is ganging up on me, it isn't a stupid fight.

The car horn goes off again, sounding nearer this time. Tahira looks out the back window but can't see any cars moving through the grime. She narrows her eyes and scans the road, jammed full of abandoned vehicles, but sees nothing. The only cars out there look like they haven't been touched in months.

There are no houses nearby either, they're just on a stretch of motorway heading towards Exeter. She doesn't want to think about the shopping centre they'll have to pass, the one where she was forced to send mummies back to Merry's group. From what Darrus has told her; he thinks they're the only group that made it out.

"Who is that?" Fawn snaps. "Can you see anyone?"

"No, nothing," Darrus replies. "Hopefully they'll pass us by without noticing us."

"Or they're trying to get our attention."

"We've been parked here for an hour. No way has anyone seen us move."

Despite Darrus' assumptions, she feels a twinge of anxiety. Something isn't right. The car sounded like it was closer this time. No way could it be a mummy that accidentally slumped on the steering wheel. Someone is out there.

"Right, how much petrol do we have left?" Darrus asks, trying to peer at the dashboard.

"About a quarter of a tank," Fawn says and sighs. "Maybe we should just drive and hope we can find another car when this one runs out of juice."

"I guess there's not really any other option. We could always check out the petrol station along the way though, just in case."

Dallas looks annoyed that they're now coming around to his suggestions. She squeezes his hand softly and gives him a little smile.

The horn blares again—louder now, like it's right next to them. Eddy jumps and peers out his window before shaking his head.

"I think I see someone!" Dallas blurts out.

Darrus climbs onto her lap to peer out the window. "Shit. Someone is in that car. It's moving."

"Then let them go past," Fawn replies with a yawn.

"It's going to ram us, drive, Eddy!"

The engine roars to life, and the tyres squeal as the car reverses. In a small corner of the window, Tahira sees a black car heading toward them, and her eyes widen.

"That's one of Seth's cars!" she shrieks.

The car misses them by an inch, almost scraping the front bumper. Its wheels spin as it swings around to hit them again. She would recognise it anywhere; it’s the one she was dropped off in to get the group groceries. When she emerged after being chased by a sha, all the cars were gone.

A lump forms in her throat, and she blinks several times, so she doesn’t cry.

"Are you sure?" Darrus demands.

"Yes, I've been in that car."

"There are several cars of the same make, baby!" Fawn hisses, clinging to the sides of their seats.

"The boarding around the windows is definitely the same as the one Seth has."

Eddy pulls forward, dodging several cars as he weaves through the traffic. The car continues to pursue them, and she knows it’s Seth. All of them are thrown to the left as their car avoids an overturned lorry. Its contents have partially spilt onto the road, creating even more hazards they must avoid.

"Careful, there's glass!" Fawn yells, pointing at a glinting mound in the road.

Eddy avoids it, though there is a crunching sound from one of the wheels on the other side. They just have to hope there are no punctures. From looking out the back window, she sees Seth avoid the pile as well, and his wheels screech as he rights himself to continue the pursuit. He will not stop until he kills her.

Dallas screams as the car smashes its side against another vehicle. A few mummies have wandered into the road, attracted by the noise. She cringes as one goes flying over the hood, getting crushed by Seth's car. They’ll be nothing more than a bloody pulp on the tarmac now.

"Can we lose him?" Darrus screeches over the sound of metal screaming.

"I don't know!" Fawn answers for Eddy when he shakes his head. "There isn't anywhere to lose him."

"What if we pull into Plympton? Or Ivybridge?"

"Then there's no guarantee we'll find another working car!"

"Plympton is his territory," Tahira adds. "He knows that place inside out."

Darrus curses under his breath. "Fuck's sake. We just have to hope he doesn't have as much petrol as us."

"Or we can make him crash."

Everyone gives her a disgusted look. "You're horrible,” Fawn says. “You want to kill someone? Your own brother?"

"No! Just make his car crash."

"You've still got zombie brain. You want to kill your own brother! You're a piece of shit!"

"No, I'm not! But we could get him to stop—"

"Enough," Darrus cuts in, far too late for her liking. "We don't need to kill him. A little bump or something should do it."

"Nuh-uh, I'm not killing someone because the baby wants it!"

"You were more than happy to kill me. On several occasions."

"Because you're not a person. You're a disgusting mess that should never have been born."

"Fuck you, I've had enough of you—"

An arm is flung over her chest, preventing her from climbing in front. Darrus is giving her a cold glare, looking disappointed in her behaviour. She tries to pry him off, but he won't budge.

"We're not fighting each other here, Tahira."

"Oh really? Seems like everyone here is fighting me!"

"That's not true."

"It is, and you know it!"

"We have bigger problems than you right now, zombie girl!" Fawn says. "We're trying not to get killed here!"

"Fuck this!" Eddy explodes; it’s the loudest she's ever heard him speak.

The car comes to a sudden stop, causing everyone to lurch forward. Seth wasn't expecting this, as his front tyre catches on the car. It slams into another car, making metal and debris fly everywhere. There’s a horrible crunching sound as the car abruptly stops, almost fused with the car in front of it. Plumes of smoke rise from the hood, and the door pops open. Eddy then turns around and zooms further down the motorway, leaving Seth behind.

Tahira looks over her shoulder at her brother, who stumbles from the wreck, clutching one arm. Despite how far he is, she knows he's seething. The further they get away from him, the less safe she feels.

See you next Sunday.

The Frozen Eye Cover Design

Hi all,

It’s time for another cover reveal! Curse of Anubis #3: The Frozen Eye has now had its cover designed, once again by the amazing Deranged Doctor Design!

  • Tahira and Bastet are on the cover, though now they are joined by a horde of mummies!

  • The cat stock image on this one is my favourite so far. Having the cat looking up is so cute!

  • This cover is the opposite of the previous one, as Ra’s Eye is now with Bastet and her friends. Now they are after Horus’ Eye, which holds the power of ice and the moon,

  • In this book the characters travel to a new city, one that is even more infested with the dead than they’ve seen before.

  • The blue on this cover is gorgeous and makes the area look like an undead wasteland, which is exactly the vibe I wanted.

  • I love how the series branding has changed its colour to fit with the cover too.

The Frozen Eye will be available in ebook, paperback and hardcover in October 2025.

That’s it for this week, see you next week!

Ra’s Eye has been stolen… now everything will burn.

In the living world, a cure for the zombie virus is discovered. But when it’s accidentally spilled, it causes the zombies to mutate, making them immune to Tahira’s commands. With zombies unaffected by her, she can only watch as more die around her.

Bastet only has one chance to get Ra’s Eye back. To do that, she must get closer to her enemy. So close that if she is discovered, it will mean her permanent death. Without the assistance of her friends, she has to figure everything out on her own.

Separated in different worlds, the two of them need to make their next steps without the support of the other. With the never-ending heat and Anubis always watching, Tahira needs to figure everything out quickly before she succumbs to the humidity.
