Dragon Species Featured in Original Elementals

Hi all!

This week I’m going to give you a sneak peek at all the dragon species that will show up in Original Elementals. Some have already been in Elemental Dragons, but a lot are ones you haven’t seen before.

The list won’t contain details about each species just so there are no spoilers, but you can look up most of them. The Fauxboros, Zmei and Vivid are my own creations so you’ll have to wait to hear from them in the books!

Western Dragon

Drake

Hydra

Ouroboros

Fauxboros

Lindworm

Wyvern

Amphiptere

Great Serpent

Sea Serpent

Eastern Dragon

Fairy Dragon

Wyrm

Draconic Hybrid

Zmei

Vivid

Zmei and Vivid are technically unclassified species as they were created by Sandstone separate from other species. They have features from a lot of dragon species which makes them more formidable in battle.

All of the species above will appear in the series at some point, some will appear in multiple books. The main characters have to help one of the species with Zmei’s guidance, though as times goes on it becomes clear that Zmei doesn’t have their best interests in mind.

The book that I’ll be writing in a few weeks’ time, Sunrise, will feature Amphiptere dragons. I’m excited to write about them as I’ve only written them in a short story before. I’m looking forward to fleshing them out and how Lucia reacts to them.

That’s it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week.

The Dragon Heirarchy

Hi all,

This week I'm going to tell you about the dragon hierarchy in Elemental Dragons. In this universe they have dragons who they consider god-like and a few of them have appeared in the series or will appear in Original Elementals.

Arcturus.

The companion of Stella, the first person to develop all the elements. He is considered to be a demi-god for the powers he had. He appears in the Original Elementals series and his companion will have her own book.

Draca.

Draca appears in both series, though in Elemental Dragons they are just a clone. They are at the bottom of the rung in the hierarchy, only being one above regular dragons. They work alongside Zmei and then eventually break away from them to work for their own goals. They are considered more of a demi-god in the series.

Hydras.

All Hydras are considered gods due to the fact that they are immortal. They appear in many stories across different time periods. The most famous story is the one of Hercules and the Hydra, though in this story he isn't seen as the hero.

Zmei.

Zmei only appears in Original Elementals. They use Draca as their pawn to help with their plan. They are the one who created the elements and helped the Originals get their powers and distribute them across the country. They are closely linked to Western Dragons, though this will be explored further in Original Elementals. They call themselves the king of dragons and are considered a god due to their supposed immortality.

Vivid.

Vivid is a dragon that has been lost to time. They used to serve Sandstone loyally alongside Zmei before they were cast out. The reasons are only known to Zmei and Sandstone, who forced them into exile. Some stories say they live in a prison deep within the Earth, while others claim they are chained to clouds in the sky.

Sandstone.

This dragon goes by many names, though the current one they use is Sandstone. They are immortal and appear every 450-600 years to wreak havoc on the land. They are the biggest of all dragons and the creator of every dragon species. Unfortunately to their size they perish soon after appearing. Their body rots and they go into a slumber until it is time to wake up again. Their flesh regrows and they scour the land for food. They are the very first dragon and the top of the hierarchy. They created Zmei and Vivid to keep an eye on dragonkind when they are slumbering.

That's it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week.

Tips for Writing Around Work

Hi all,

This week I'm going to share my tips for writing while working. I do most of my writing around my working day and I usually aim for a word count of around 2000 words a day.

Evernote.

I use Evernote to write on my phone throughout the day. I write during my breaks using labelled notes to keep track of where I am. I also outline novels and character designs using the app. It makes it easier for me to switch between notes to keep track of everything. All of the notes are no more than 10K long so I can keep a general track of my word count.

Silver tipped gloves.

When it gets colder in the winter months I still want to write while out and about. Silver tipped gloves enable me to use my phone without my hands getting too cold. They work really well, it just takes a bit longer to type.

Write during breaks.

I write during my breaks at work and usually on my commute. It means I don't have to write as much when I get home which enables me to relax a bit and focus more on the marketing side of things.

Small word count goals.

Writing in small bursts multiple times during the day really helps me to stay focused and gives me enough breaks in between. 300-400 words in my ten minute breaks and 800-1000 words during my lunch break.

Outline beforehand.

No matter if you're a planner or not, make sure you have a rough outline before you start writing. This will make it a lot easier to write on the go. I have a rough plan of where the plot will go and what the characters are like.

Edit at home.

I write around my working day and then edit at home. It means that I'm not tempted to edit while I'm writing. I edit on my laptop to catch most of the typos that occur due to writing on my phone.

That's it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week.

Camp NaNoWriMo Project Announcement - April 2023

Hi all!

Every time I participate in a NaNoWriMo event, I want to make a little announcement post beforehand as well as a brief overview about what the book will be about!

For this April, I will be hoping to get 50K words written in the first draft of Original Elementals #6: Sunrise. This book will be in the point of view of Lucia, the first Light Elemental, who will be leaving Aria to help her father with his business. He sells items made from dragon parts; be it scales, feathers, claws or teeth. She has been tasked with helping Amphiptere Dragons, but they’re her father’s greatest asset in his business. Her relationship with her dragon, Sunrise, will also be explored. The two don’t get on at the moment as the dragon is horrifically scarred and won’t listen to a word she says.

Sunrise and Lucia will be the main focuses of the book, but the rivalry between the Krystalans and the Cindaraans will also come to light. Lucia is brash and thinks that she’s always right, so I’m looking forward to telling her story and hopefully showing her in a more neutral light. The other Originals will appear too, with Benjamin having a large role in this book as well. I want to be able to explore Sunrise’s relationship with other dragons and why he treats them the way he does.

This will be the last book in the Original Elementals series that I will write before taking a break. The next book that I write will not be in the Original Elementals series and will instead be something completely different. This is so I don’t get exhausted writing in the same series and also enables me to write some standalones that I’ve been planning for years.

That’s it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week.

My Favourite Books in Different Genres

Hi all!

This week I’m going to post about my favourite books in the genres I love reading! I’ve limited myself to one favourite per genre and I’ve excluded all Warriors books because I’ve blogged about them before and long-time readers know I love them. I have a good mix of traditionally published and self-published books here as well.

Fantasy: Ratha’s Creature

I’ve always had a love for big cats so this book shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. I devoured this series when I was younger and daydreamed about writing prehistoric big cats because of this book. Ratha is a beautifully flawed character but I loved watching her grow across the series.

Horror: Cujo

This book made me fall in love with the horror genre. I never picked up a horror book before this one because I wasn’t sure if I was going to like them. Reading Cujo get sicker and sicker made it so that I couldn’t put the book down, I was so desperate to find out what happened next.

GameLit: The Carnelian Fox

This was the first GameLit book I ever read, I didn’t even know the genre existed until I came across this book. I’ve always loved Pokémon and this book takes a lot of those elements and puts it into a book: collecting elemental animals, building a team and battling. The series is still ongoing and I can’t wait for the next one.

Sci-Fi: Refuge

This book has an incredible premise and I love the characters in it. The descriptions of how the human race starts to fall are so vivid and I read the first book in one sitting. I still have the rest of the series that I need to read, but I keep putting it off because I don’t want it to end!

Crime: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

I never read an Agatha Christie novel before this one and I absolutely loved it! I’m not very good at figuring out who did it but it was a very fun read nonetheless. I’m hoping to read more of her books this year.

Post-Apocalyptic: The Dead Don’t Turn

Although I lost interest with the later books in the series, I really loved the first one. The characters are great and seeing them all trying to deal with a virus in their own way is interesting. Unfortunately the series starts off well but goes off in a direction I wasn’t a fan of.

That’s it for this week! Keep an eye out next week, as you might miss an announcement about a book out for pre-order… See you next week!

Food Chain

Hi all!

Years ago I wrote a short story that I haven’t published called Food Chain. After writing a sequel I decided I wanted to continue writing in that universe. I thought I’d share the first part with you just in case I write more of it in the future!

Food Chain

A growl rumbles in Bagira's throat as she takes in the scent of her prey. It has recently passed through; the trail is still fresh. She breaks into a trot, her fluffy tail swishing from side to side. Her large paws are silent against the pavement.

A bird flying overhead barely makes her flinch as she continues in pursuit of her prey. She can hear the herd now, screeching to each other. Pressing her body low to the ground, she scoots into a patch of yellow grass, keeping her tail low and out of view.

The hooves of her prey clink on the concrete as they move from side to side, searching for anything edible. She pulls her lips back in a snarl as she eyes her target: an older camel with some sort of limp. Although it's large, she's confident she can take it down.

The brown animal huffs and bends its head, slowly moving away from the others. She licks her lips and wills her body to keep still as it inches further and further away from the herd.

Once it's far enough, she leaps.

She clashes with its tough hide, manoeuvring herself to climb onto its back. She digs her claws into its humps as she moves towards its head.

The creature shrieks and alerts the rest of the herd, which take off with a few panicked kicks. Dust is kicked into her eyes, but she manages to blink it out by the time her claws are hooked in its throat. It bleats and bucks its entire body, throwing her onto the concrete.

Momentarily winded, she watches her prey escape. Once she regains her composure she leaps onto the nearest wall and gives chase.

Thankfully due to its injury it's relatively slow, allowing her to catch up with ease. When she's side by side with it she launches herself at its throat. Teeth meets skin and makes a tearing sound upon contact. The taste of blood fills her mouth as the camel continues its vain attempt to escape. It manages to pull her in different directions, kicking up more dust and dirt and scouring the earth with its hooves. Once she can feel it weakening, she locks her arms around its face and takes another bite. This time it makes a horrified gurgling sound before slumping onto its knees. She licks her lips as it bleeds out in front of her.

Pleased with her kill, she goes to drag back to her lair when a loud bang makes her eardrums vibrate. She can only growl as a human male approaches, his death stick targeting her head. He points his stick at her and then towards the wall. Not wanting to give her prey up so easily, she stands her ground and roars at him. He gets too close for comfort, leaving her no choice but to smack the death stick out of his paws.

His grubby paws fly above his head as soon as she does so, and he starts backing off. The smell of sweat and urine emanates from his body, unlikely to be a tasty meal. With one last growl she returns to her camel, keeping her brown eyes locked on him.

Although his face is contorted in what she can only imagine is anger, he makes no other attempt to pursue her.

***

The camel is barely inside when her cubs burst out. Their grey spots are just starting to come through their snow-white fur, though their eyes are still a baby blue, yet to change to their permanent colour.

She cuffs her sons over their ears when they start playing with the prey's ears, whacking its limp skin. With a growl they sit up straight, watching her eat with curious eyes. They are not old enough to eat fresh kill yet, but she still prefers to stay close to them while eating herself. She had to go further this time, deeper into the abandoned buildings of the human city.

Her cubs play fight amongst the corpse of an old human transport, her mother had called them monsters. This one has been dead for years though, its pelt, once shiny and a vibrant colour, is now nothing more than a rusted brown and stone cold. She draws her tongue over her lips once she's done, dragging the rest of her kill into her lair. She had chosen old human territory to nest in. The humans didn't seem to want the large building anymore, even though there are remnants of their old rags inside.

She had taken to this place after the disaster. From her cage she had watched men flee as the sky burned orange and red with the fury of nature. The stars had been blocked out for days and she had been left to fend for herself. Sometimes she can still taste the ash, despite it clearing months ago. Once other animals started escaping into the human territory, she followed them, wanting a stable food source for her cubs.

Her eyelids start to droop, and she dreams of the days where she used to loll around in the sun, when two short booms catch her attention. Rushing back outside, her cubs are missing. She growls to call them to her, but they don't respond. Blood stains the floor where they had been playing and panic rises in her stomach.

She tastes the air once more, catching the scent of man. With a growl she bounds after the scent of her cubs, coming across a man wielding a death stick. In his arms are her cubs, hanging limply with blood dripping from their white fur.

They aren't supposed to hunt leopards.

With a roar, she launches at him. He doesn't have time to react when she knocks him over, crunching his collarbone with her teeth. Her cubs fly out of his arms and bounce off the pavement.

With a whine she noses one, but he is getting colder by the second. She roars at the sky, screaming her fury at nature for letting man take her cubs from her.

***

It's been days now, but Bagira isn't willing to let her cubs die in vain. Since she killed the man who had taken them from her, she had been stalking the human herd. They were moving North, using the camels she had previously hunted to pull their strange wooden contraptions. If they had noticed her, they hadn't bothered chasing her off, and they also didn't seem to care about the man she killed.

For days she had watched the human cubs play amongst the camels, but they weren't her target. Knowing that the men have moved ahead of their contraptions, she makes her move. The first camels spot her and start to bleat, but the men pay no attention.

It doesn't take much growling for them to start to run. The wooden contraptions are pulled behind them, crashing around on the concrete. The wooden wheels catch on the pavement and rip off, the contraptions dropping their cargo. Once a few camels start to flee, the whole herd follows. She creeps back into the grass with satisfaction as the camels rush through the human hunting grounds, trampling anyone who gets in their way. The men scream and either dive to safety or attempt to call the camels back. Without their precious camels they won't last long, especially if the contents of those contraptions are important.

Their screams are like music to her ears as she continues to follow the carnage. A lone man has been left behind by the others, his limbs crushed and sticking out at different angles. He feebly tries to pull himself after the others, his bones clicking with each movement. She places a paw on his back, relishing in the fear in his eyes as she delivers the killing bite.

No longer would she hunt wild camels.

Humans are her prey now.

That’s it for this week, maybe one day I’ll share more about Bagira and her story. Maybe I’ll post the short stories on my Patreon when I set it up! See you next week.

The First Elemental Dragons Bookmark

Hi all!

Last week I promised to show off a new piece of merchandise to you. If you haven't guessed from the title, it's a bookmark!

This one has been designed for Blood and Water, to match the colour scheme of the cover. The design was made by Blink Marketing and they also printed the bookmarks for me as well.

I've used one as a practice and I like the size and feel of the bookmark. I've added tassels as well because I like something extra that sticks out so you don't accidentally open the wrong page. The tassels come in a range of colours and I've added them to about half of the bookmarks so far. I think I will keep it this way so people have the option of a tassel if they want one.

I will be running a giveaway for these bookmarks, one on social media and one for my newsletter subscribers. If you want two chances of winning, you can sign up to my newsletter here: Newsletter

In the future I would like to have bookmarks made for each of my books. I thought about doing them in order but I will instead leave it to my mailing list subscribers to choose which one they want to see next. I'm going to get some colourful gel pens as well so I can sign them if that's what people want!

Eventually I would like to sell these, signed or unsigned, in a shop that I plan to open. They would be available on their own or hopefully in little packs that include a signed book. I'm still working out the logistics of this, so keep an eye out!

You can follow my Twitter, @jess_a_turnbull, so you can enter the giveaway. I'll be posting it later next week.

That's it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading. See you next week.

PS: last chance to pick up the books in this bundle!

Mute and Years Have Won Awards!

Hi all,

This week I’m writing about the 2023 Author Shout Reader Ready Awards. I entered both Years and Mute in around June last year and pushed it to the back of my mind until November. I received an email stating that both books had made through the first stage so I was pretty excited to see if they would place anywhere. Then I finally got the emails with the results…

Both of them won ‘Recommended Read’ awards!

I don’t enter my books in many awards as there are quite a few that are scams. They prey on writers who want to be an ‘award-winning’ author. A lot of these charge extortionate fees which then don’t end up going towards the prize pool. I always do my research before entering any awards. Usually Googling an award can show up with several results from other authors about their experiences. Another part that I came across that disappointed me is the amount of awards that won’t touch self-published books.

I entered Elemental Dragons #1: Blood and Water in the 2020 Reader Ready Awards so I knew that I could trust Author Shout. I just thought that I’d enter Mute and Years just to see how they would get on, I didn’t expect them to place in the second category!

I will be entering my books in more awards in the future but for now I’m going to take a break and focus on my writing. There are plenty of awards out there, after all! Maybe I’ll enter Celestial Plague #1: Nirvana in an award of some sort later in the year, when I have more books out in that series.

That’s it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading. Next week I’m going to unveil a new piece of merchandise that I hope you will be excited to see! See you next week.
