I Finally Signed up To Kindle Unlimited

Hi all,

I saw Amazon were offering a free trail of Kindle Unlimited, or KU, when I was looking for books the other day. KU is a subscription service with Amazon where you pay a monthly fee and can download as many ebooks as you want. As long as the author has enrolled their ebook in KU, you can download it for free. I've always put off getting KU as I wasn't sure how good it will be.

Well, I wish I had done it sooner.

There are so many good books on KU and I've downloaded quite a few already! Books that I had read previously have the entire series on KU, so I've been adding them to my library to read later. Already I'm saving myself quite a bit of money for one subscription. When I signed up I was on the fence about keeping it, but now I definitely will.

I know it's going to help me achieve my goal of reading 100 books this year. Thanks to it, I'll probably go over this goal.

Some of the pros I've found so far are:

Its cheaper.

I'm saving a lot of money downloading the books in KU than if I were to outright buy them. This is a lot of help for those who read a lot of books but can't afford to buy every one.

You're still supporting the author.

Even though you're downloading the book for free, you're still supporting the author. For every page you read, the author gets paid. If you stop reading halfway, then they only get paid according to the pages you read. You're still supporting your favourite authors with your subscription!

Variety.

There are a lot of books in KU, with new ones getting added every day. Some people may find that they're downloading more books than they can read.

If you're on the fence with subscribing to KU, I'd take advantage of Amazon's free trail just so you can see what it's like. As long as you cancel before they charge you if it's not for you, you don't have to pay anything.

Also, a little reminder: all of my books are enrolled in KU! So if you do sign up then you'll be able to download all of my books for free.

That's it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week.

PS; don’t forget to check out these book bundles! All of the books are in Kindle Unlimited too:

Seashine - Excerpt

Hi all,

This week I’m going to share the beginning of Celestial Plague #0: Seashine. It’s a prequel enovella for the Celestial Plague series and is only available when you sign up to my mailing list. You can also download the Elemental Dragons Short Story Collection, Famished and Solar Child. All for free!

She can do nothing but watch as the test subject thrashes on his stretcher, a feral roar exploding from his lungs. His eyes are pink and bloodshot, but she can clearly see the signature blue ring setting around his irises.

Phase one, complete. She mentally checks off.

The other people in the room watch with a mixture of disgust and awe as the man's skin starts to turn a sickly grey. Her heartbeat quickens at the thought of being close to their goal, but then he slumps backwards with his mouth hanging open.

No!

For a few seconds no-one says anything until her boss, the one in charge of this project, clears his throat and steps forward.

"I thought we had it." He curses, picking at a scab on his neck.

"We were so close. Next time we'll have it for sure." She reassures him.

His gaze snaps to her and she can't help but stare at his eyes. Pure black but conveying such intense annoyance. For a second, she's afraid she's said the wrong thing, he has an extreme temper, but then his shoulders relax.

"You're right, Oceana. The positive thing is that he survived phase one. That has to count for something, right?"

Oceana dips her head. "Of course, Dr West."

He sighs. "Let's see what our investors have to say."

Oceana follows him out of the sterile white room, relieved to be away from the body. She could handle them while they're living and changing, but the second they die she gets squeamish. The second time she fainted while handling them, so Dr West now gets one of the cleaners to do it. She thought she was fired for sure; he was so angry.

Out in the hallway the 'investors' have gathered. Her eyes drift to the man with two large red tentacles for arms. He’s the one they have to please the most, as his unit is funding most of their project. His power still puts her off every time she sees him though.

"Dr West, we're impressed with what we saw."

Oceana has to grit her teeth to prevent her mouth from dropping open. How could they be impressed with that? The experiment was a total failure despite the subject lasting past phase one.

"I'm glad to hear that." Dr West replies, not even an ounce of surprise in his voice.

"And you, Fish Girl, how is the upgrade for the Bots going?"

Oceana flinches at his tone. It doesn't matter how many times she tells these people her name, they always call her Fish Girl. She resists the urge to stare at the green and blue scales that cover the back of her hands. The scales cover her entire body, giving her the 'look' of a fish despite the rest of her being human. However, she wasn't going to let it get to her. She was teased relentlessly about her power in school and isn't about to relive that again.

"Eighty percent complete." She answers, looking him right in the eye.

Uncomfortable, he looks away. "Good. On our next visit I want it at ninety percent."

Dr West glances over his shoulder at her. "Is that possible, Oceana?"

"Yes sir."

Although her main job is robotics and engineering in the Halo-O department, Dr West handpicked her to help with his secret project. She had been honoured at first, then horrified once she understood what it was, now it just leaves her with a numb feeling. Work isn’t as mundane as it used to be, but sometimes she wishes it was.

"Good. We'll be back in two weeks to check your progress." He says, trying not to glance in her direction.

Dr West nods and the group leaves, walking single file down the slim corridor. Fluorescent red strips have been added to the walls to lead the way, the colour red was chosen as Dr West assumed many people would think danger and not wander too far down. So far, apart from one or two, he had been right.

"Don't let him get to you," Dr West says. "He's one of the biggest assholes I've ever met."

She smiles politely, unsure of how to respond. "Do you need me to set up for the next round?"

"No. Go work with the Bots for the rest of your shift. We'll begin again tomorrow."

She tries not to let her relief show. Instead, she nods and follows the red strips out into another hallway. As she makes her way to the robotics department, marked with florescent green strips, she tries to calm her beating heart. They had been so close this time, the virus was so close to taking. But why hadn't it? She trusted Dr West's theories and knew that they would get there at some point.

At least the Sergeant was pleased.

Swiping her key card once she reaches the giant metal door, she ignores the stares of her colleagues as she makes her way to her desk, situated in the middle of the room. Blueprints and various wires are strewn across it, which she pushes to one side to log in to her computer. As she's scouring her emails for the day, she doesn't realise someone is in front of her until a Bot eye is dropped on her desk. It's grey with a single slit in the middle, storing the facial recognition software and direction input.

"This one broke down again." Her colleague says.

She doesn't bother looking up at him. "This looks like Warren's work to me."

The crazed cult leader was against anything that went against his view of the world. He believed that everyone’s powers are the work of the devil, and they should never use them. They need to avoid the urge of temptation and ignore their powers until God cleanses them of them. All his teachings ignore the fact that everyone is born like this, a lot of people don’t even want the powers they have. His followers have destroyed many Bots before, targeting the street cleaners. It baffles her that people could destroy something that is innocently trying to clean their area and make sure they're safe.

From the corner of her eye, she can see her colleague shrug. "You know Warren."

Oceana pushes her glasses further up her nose, this wouldn't be an easy fix, if she could even fix it at all. Most of the wires have been sliced through and the hardware inside is fried. The outer shell has been dented and crumpled like a piece of paper.

"I think we have to write this one off." She says with a sigh.

"No can do. Management wants this one up and running to look at its chip."

She plucks a frayed wire from the mess. "They want this fixed?"

Her colleague's face goes sour. "Dr West himself recommended your services. According to him you're the best one for the job."

She doesn't need to meet his gaze to feel the hostility rolling off him in waves. Ever since Dr West picked her for his side project her colleagues have been nothing but rude and jealous. At first it had bothered her, but then she realised that they were just waiting for her to fail, and she wasn't going to give them the satisfaction.

"Fine. It will take a few weeks."

"I'm sure Fish Girl won't disappoint."

She can only glare at the back of his head when he walks away. Everyone uses her appearance against her, not caring if it hurts.

Glancing at the mess on the table, she heaves a sigh. "I'll try my best."

***

As Oceana is on the latest shift, she's the last one out of her department. She’s managed to get a few of the dents out of the Bot but that’s about it. Its resilient shell proved hard to mould and shape. She nods to a security guard as she passes by, almost getting to reception before getting called back.

"Excuse me, are you Oceana?"

She pauses and turns back to the female guard. "Yes."

"And you're working with Dr West?"

Oceana's scales prickle at the line of questioning. "Yes."

The woman visibly relaxes. "There's an alarm going off in Dr West's office. I can't get hold of him and don't have clearance to turn it off. Can you help?"

"Of course."

The two women make their way down the corridor, smiling at everyone they pass. Once they get to Dr West's office the guard pauses before opening the door. A high-pitched alarm immediately cuts through, making Oceana's ears thrum. She opens the panel by the door and punches in the code and after a second they're left with only the ringing in their ears.

"Thank you. It’s been going off for ages."

"Do you know what triggered it?"

"No idea. I checked the CCTV; no-one has been in or out for hours."

Although Oceana knows that she should turn around and go home, a prickle in her gut wants her to go in. "Do you mind if I take a look around? Just in case it was a faulty wire."

"That would be great, thanks. I don't want it going off again after you've left."

The guard leaves her to it and Oceana peers into the room. Unlike the other offices this one has carpet, a deep burgundy. The walls are filled with Dr West's awards and achievements, with a few also standing up on his desk. There are two bookshelves at the back of the room, filled with textbooks about machinery and DNA. To her surprise there's also a famous romance novel shoved in the middle, she didn't take him as a fiction reader.

She slides under his desk to look through the wires, checking if any are damaged or frayed. Once she's happy that it wasn't a fire alarm that was triggered, she sits up and returns to the panel. She punches a new code to do a room check, which whirs for a few seconds before a message pops up on the screen.

"'Unidentified obstruction'? Where?"

She runs the diagnostic again, but it comes back with the same message. That's when the sound of scratching from behind the wall makes her skin crawl. She presses her ear against the wall, trying to locate the source of the sound.

"Oceana?"

The voice makes her jump. "Dr West! They finally got hold of you?"

"Yes, I just checked my messages. What are you doing?"

She taps the message on the panel. "It says there's an obstruction. I hear scratching so it might be a rat."

To her surprise he relaxes and runs another diagnostic check. "I hope not. The last thing we need is something getting wedged behind a wall."

"Maybe we could set traps in the vents. If they can get in a wall they can get in there."

"Good idea. I'll get on that tomorrow. Thank you for your help."

She smiles politely and walks out, back towards reception to go home. The scratching in the walls had been creepy, but it was just a rat. She hopes that they won’t chew their way through her desk as well.

That’s it for this week! If you sign up to my mailing list, you’ll get four FREE enovellas and a monthly email with updates, short stories and giveaways. See you next week!

Nirvana is now Available on Amazon

Hi all,

The first book in the Celestial Plague series, Nirvana, is now available on Amazon in ebook, paperback and hardcover! This is the first book where I’ve used chapter headers, which I think makes each chapter look really pretty! Check it out below:

The world as we know it is over and all it takes to survive is your humanity.

The SARJ virus is an epidemic that is quickly overtaking an already broken world. Dividing it between the Bitten and Unbitten and forever changing the course of human history. When Shannon becomes infected with the virus her entire life changes forever.

For Shannon to make it to Nirvana she’ll have to spread the virus. But can she live with the consequences of those actions?

The urge to spread the virus is almost overpowering but infecting others comes at high cost; not just to her humanity but the innate powers she was born with. With every bite she loses a little of her power and a little bit of herself as well.

To stem the tide of Bitten rampaging through their cities the Unbitten release robots on them. Cold, calculating killing machines that don’t understand the term mercy are now exterminating people like Shannon.

Will she be able to survive the onslaught, protect her friends, and hold onto her humanity all at the same time?

That’s it for this week, if you read Nirvana, I hope you enjoy it! See you next week.

The Character Who Hates Her Power The Most in Celestial Plague

Hi all!

The last main character in Celestial Plague who needs a blog post is Ashleigh Warren. Although quiet and loyal, she's the one that gets the most transformation in the series.

Ashleigh's mother died shortly after giving birth to her. Her father, who she calls Lord Warren, gave her to his sister to raise while he created his cult. By the time Ashleigh was two, the cult had over five hundred members. At six years old, the cult had absorbed most of her town and created it's own little area - Warrville. It's here in the Warrish cult that she met Raya and Shannon. They grew up together, learning about sins and how to guarantee that they will get a place in the afterlife. Ashleigh believed in this the most out of her friends, as she was also getting taught it at home by Warren. Just before her ninth birthday her aunt went missing and never returned. Ashleigh grieved heavily for the loss of the woman she called mother, and never knew what happened to her.

In Warrish, powers are not be used as they are sinful. In school, students are taught to control their powers. Warren pulled Ashleigh out of those classes and made her believe that using her power would mean that she is disrespecting God. Ashleigh has the power to change the colour of hair and fabrics. Though because Warren never let her practice, she has no control over it. She wears gloves to prevent herself from accidentally using her power. She's always ashamed to take them off at night, as the insides are always brightly coloured. As her power is transferred through her skin, she tries to keep herself as covered up as possible. Every time she accidentally brushes against someone and changes the colour of their hair, she has to punish herself as per Warren's teachings. She follows his teachings as much as she can and is completely brainwashed by them.

She is the most naïve of the group, believing everything Warren says without question. The only thing that she struggles to agree with him is marriage. Ashleigh is asexual aromantic, though she doesn't know it. She thinks something is wrong with her as she doesn't want to get married and hates the idea of sex and childbirth. Her friends accept her for who she is, which gives her some comfort. All of her friends are LGBTQ+, with Shannon and Jenna being lesbians and Raya being bisexual. She struggles with this idea as Warrish teaches her to hate them for feeling that way. But she can't hate her friends, and instead tries her best to help them in whatever way she can.

Like Raya, Ashleigh doesn't get along with Jenna too well. Even she can see through Jenna's façade and isn't convinced that she loves Shannon. While she tries to be support of her friend, she knows the relationship will end badly. She also isn't a huge fan of Dan, as he is completely obsessed with Raya and she doesn't like being around men.

That's it for the main characters of Celestial Plague! Next week's blog post will announce the publication of Celestial Plague #1: Nirvana, so don't miss it! See you next week.

The Character Who Can Breathe Underwater in Celestial Plague

Hi all,

With the first book in the Celestial Plague series coming out in less than two weeks I wanted to talk about Jenna, one of the main characters. Her power is passive, resulting in her having gills. She is the only one if the main characters to have never been a part of Warren's cult as she only moved to the town a few years prior. She is slightly more comfortable with her power than the others, thought the opportunity to use it doesn't come up all that often. At the beginning of Nirvana she is Shannon's girlfriend, though she quickly dumps her when Shannon is Bitten.

When Jenna was little, her parents tried to teach her to swim by throwing her in water with her gills taped shut. As she was so little at the time she would pass out a lot. Once authorities caught wind of this she was placed into foster care. She lives with her foster family, though she doesn't like being at home. Her foster parents favour her foster brothers so she feels like the black sheep. To please them she even gets into a relationship with Shannon, though this only to conceal her real relationship. Her foster parents wouldn't approve of her actual girlfriend so she keeps her hidden. Her foster family moved to the town a few years prior and have never interacted with Warren's cult. He is only interested in recruiting the locals as they are more likely to tell others in the town and convince them to join. Jenna has never been interested in Warrish and looks down upon its members, especially Ashleigh.

She's willing to take whatever job she can get to get out of the town. Despite her traumatic childhood she isn't afraid of water. Although she tends to avoid swimming for the most part. One job that she would like is a Marine Biologist, as she finds the subject interesting and would like to dive for treasure which she can then make millions from. The one thing she hasn't considered is that there isn't much treasure left to pillage thanks to other Marine Biologists.

Jenna doesn't get on with Ashleigh and Raya that well. they see through her façade with Shannon. But she has Shannon wrapped so tightly around her finger that she can ignore them. When the apocalypse hits she initially loves staying with Raya thanks to her being the only one with an offensive power. As much as she would love for Raya to kill all the Bitten, Raya refuses to hurt anyone unless necessary. Jenna is the most cruel of the four, believing that all the Bitten need to be wiped out as they aren't human anymore. She finds various Unbitten factions but is disgusted when they take in Bitten members. Her goal is to create a completely Unbitten faction that will fight back against the Bitten and reclaim the planet.

Next week I'll write a post on Ashleigh - the last main character of Celestial Plague.

I hope you enjoyed reading, see you next week.

Series Based off of Mythology

Hi all,

If you've read some of my old blog posts then you'll know that a lot of my writing is based off of various mythology and mythological creatures. I was always interested in mythology when I was little and that has carried over into my adult life and my writing. I've already written one series based off of Egyptian mythology but I thought I'd talk a bit more about other mythologies that I would like to write about as well.

Egyptian.

Curse of Anubis includes Egyptian gods. The ones that show up the most are: Bastet, Sekhmet, Set, Anubis and Mafdet. I've always wanted to write about Egyptian mythology as I've always loved reading the stories growing up. I would love to go to Egypt one day to see the pyramids and I'm always on the lookout for Egyptian exhibits in museums.

Greek.

Greek mythology was my favourite when I was younger. I had numerous books about the stories of the gods and demi-gods. I've got a series planned, Damaged Goods, which will centre around the Greeks. Pyrrah, the daughter of Hades, struggles to find her way in the world when her father turns his back on her. Desperate for power, she vows revenge on the gods and recruits their descendants to help her. There's also the book that I want to write for Patreon about Laelaps and the Teumessian Fox which is based off the story of the uncatchable fox and the dog that never loses its prey.

Norse.

The part that interests me the most about Norse mythology are the Valkyries. I want to write a series about a school where girls are trained to be Valkyries and paired with their flying horse partners. It would be like Elemental Dragons, but instead of dragons there would be flying horses instead!

Celtic.

I've only recently started looking into more and more Celtic mythology and I find it really interesting. I would like to write about it in some way but I'm currently brain storming ideas. I'm sure I'll come up with something good at some point!

Persian.

This one is the one I know the least about as I've only just started researching it. But so far I've seen a few mythological creatures that have caught my eye that I think would be interesting to write about. Once I've done some more research I'll have a think about what stands out to me most.

That's it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week.

My Trip in London

Hi all,

This week my boyfriend and I went to London for a few days and I thought I’d share some pictures with you! The trip didn’t go as planned due to a few set backs, but we managed to see everything we wanted to see.

Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium

We visited a cat café, which was amazing! The cats were adorable and we played with quite a few of them. My boyfriend took loads of pictures while we were there but these are my favourite ones. We also had some cake while we were there, though we were careful not to let the cats have any.

I’d recommend visiting this café if you’re looking to play with some cute cats. They do have a few house rules, but they’re easy to follow and makes everything less stressful for the cats. They even have pictures on the wall of previous residents who have now found their forever homes, which was cute!

The Natural History Museum

We visited the Natural History Museum to have a look at some of the dinosaur exhibits, though we did also end up seeing almost everything in the museum. Of course the dinosaurs were my favourite part, but I also liked the earthquake and volcano zone. It reminded me a lot of when I studied Geography at school, which was one of my favourite subjects.

I did get a soft plush of a Smilodon, also known as a Sabre-Toothed Tiger. Of course I had to pick out a big cat! Maybe I’ll write a story about a Smilodon one day, I do find them fascinating.

Smilodon, or Sabre-Toothed Tiger

That’s it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! Keep an eye out for next week’s blog post, which includes details of how you can download one of my books for free… See you next week!

My Book Merchandise

Hi all!

This week I’m going to talk about what merchandise there is for my books and what I plan to do with it in the future. At the moment everything is based on the Elemental Dragons series, though I hope to expand this to my other books in the future.

The picture above displays all the merchandise so far:

  • Pins of Aqueous and Drea (Top Row)

  • Round stickers of Aqueous, Drea and Damayanti (Bottom Row)

  • Holographic sticker of Aqueous (Left Middle)

  • Die cute sticker of Damayanti (Right Middle)

  • Bookplate (Middle)

I’m having a giveaway of everything pictured for my newsletter subscribers at the moment, I’ll send another email about it in a week’s time. If you want to enter, just sign up to my newsletter before next week and wait for that email: Newsletter. You’ll get access to three (with more coming in the future) FREE enovellas.

With book merchandise, I really want to know what you want. You’re my reader, and your opinion matters. If you want to help me decide what merch you want to see next, you can take this survey. It takes two minutes and it would be a massive help: Merch Survey.

In the future I would like to create a shop so you can get your hands on some of the merch outside of giveaways. I’ve been looking at options but haven’t decided anything concrete yet. One thing I’ll most likely offer is a ‘Signed Book Bundle’ which includes a signed paperback copy of one of my books and stickers.

The next piece of merch that I’m going to get done are bookmarks for each of my books. After stickers and pins this seems like what people want the most so I’ll be looking into the design and making of these.

Another way that I’m thinking of offering merch is through Patreon. I have been thinking of creating a Patreon for a while and have ideas for what I would offer. One thing would be I would write a book exclusively for Patreon until it’s finished and then publish it alongside my other books. This would not be a book in any of my series, but a standalone that I want to write. I’ve mentioned in a post previously about wanting to write about the Teumessian Fox and Laelaps. The book would be around the length of my current books, around 75K-80K words and updated weekly. Those who subscribe to a higher tier would get stickers and other merch as well.

I will probably make another blog post talking about my plan for Patreon and a shop in the future, so for now the only way to get your hands on merch is through giveaways. I’ll probably do more in the future, including when Celestial Plague #1: Nirvana, comes out in October!

That’s it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading. See you next week.

How Lockdowns Influenced Celestial Plague

Hi all,

This week I'm going to talk about how the lockdowns influenced my YA Post-Apocalyptic series, Celestial Plague. The series starts because a virus starts spreading around the world, infecting people and encouraging them to infect others so they can pass onto Nirvana or Heaven. While I started writing the series before the pandemic, I have gone back and edited some parts to be more realistic to the lockdowns that happened around the world.

Isolation.

The SARJ virus happens very early in the books so we only see the characters at school once. Shannon watches a short news reel on the virus which states that it's spreading, but no procedures have been put in place yet. The characters all still go to school as normal before the virus hits their small town. They hide in Shannon's house, only letting in one person who infects Shannon before leaving. The rest of the girls then keep Shannon in her bedroom until they can determine that she won't infect them. They mainly stay in Shannon's house for the first book until they are forced to leave. The SARJ virus is not a respiratory one, instead it is spread through bites. The virus also shows it's symptoms almost immediately, which means that the infected can be isolated if others are quick enough.

Groceries.

When the girls sneak out to get food, they notice that toilet paper and perishable food has all been taken first. Originally I wrote that canned food would be the first to run out of stock but when lockdown happened that wasn't the case. It was mostly bread, milk, toilet paper and hand sanitiser that ran out first. So I incorporated that into the books.

Misinformation.

The main source of misinformation in Celestial Plague comes from Warren, the leader of a cult. At first he tells people that the virus only takes the sinners and kicks out the infected. But he then has a change of heart down the line and starts accepting the infected as well. He preaches ways people can keep themselves safe from the virus and that it's a punishment from God. He is also able to control some of the 'demons' that appear when people start going to Nirvana and Heaven.

Travel.

Due to most people getting infected and passing on to Nirvana or Heaven, the girls don't come across many people in vehicles. When they do it's usually from people who have looted them from those who have gone. When lockdowns first happened there were very few people on the roads, so I tried to incorporate that into Celestial Plague.

Fear.

The SARJ virus can only be passed on through a bite from a human. So this makes the survivors fear the infected more so than usual. One of the main characters, Jenna, is especially hostile towards the infected and hates them with a passion. There are many groups that will only allow those who are uninfected to stay with them. When the lockdowns happened, people were scared for their lives and tried to stay away from others as much as possible. This is also true in Celestial Plague.

That's it for this week, see you next week!
