Elemental Dragons - Purpose

Hi all,

This week I’m going to post one of the stories featured in the Elemental Dragons Short Story Collection. To read all of these stories, you can sign up to my mailing list and download the ebook here: Free Ebook.

Now, onto the story - Purpose.

Purpose.

That’s all Moon wishes for as he lazes in the warm grass, his scaly body draped in the only sunny spot in the entire forest. Birdsong fills his ears as he closes his eyes, letting the sweet smells of flowers and morning dew fill his nostrils.

Life isn’t very fun without some sort of purpose.

When Derek was alive, he had a purpose, but now all he’s left with is a numb heart. The feisty young ginger boy had been snatched from the claws of life far too early, and because of that, Moon is alone.

He huffs, a thin column of grey smoke flowing from his half-closed mouth. His golden eyes fly open at the sound of rustling directly in front of him. Baring his teeth at the emerald green bushes, he barks out a warning to whatever might be hiding behind the thick foliage. It definitely wasn’t a woodland rabbit or bird.

The rustling continues, more ferociously this time, making Moon back away until his rump grazes the tree bark behind him, scuffing his black and cream scales. For days he had watched this area like a hawk, making sure that no other dragon had claimed this territory as its own. He was so sure that there was no scent markers or scratched bark, could he have been wrong?

A tiny, square orange head peeks out from the bush, a twig sticking out of its ear. The orange dragon breaks out into a large grin at the sight of the older dragon before plunging back into the sea of leaves. Baffled, Moon approaches the bush, sticking his snout amidst the leaves to get a whiff of the young dragon. Mumbling a few questions to the bush dragon, he’s surprised to get several squeaks of reply from other bushes as well. Just as he steps back into the clearing, four tiny bodies slam into him from different angles.

Moon yelps in surprise but is able to calm his beating heart when the tiny dragons screech about getting to ride the large dragon. Shaking himself like a wet dog, Moon is able to dislodge all but one of the small dragons, who clings to his wing with it’s tiny claws. The remaining dragon is able to scramble onto his back, squeaking with pride. The rest of the group bark victoriously at his feet as the small dragon perches itself on his head, its silver feet crushing his snout. With a huff, Moon dips his head forward, causing the little white dragon to tumble onto the grassy floor with its feet and tail bolt upright like a kitten ready to play.

He wasn’t aware that younglings were around here.

They don’t look like locals, they must be visitors, like him.

Moon growls as the young dragons approach him again, only to flatten their ears at his warning. The orange dragon from before introduces himself as Fireball, fluttering his garish yellow wings. With a flippant flick of his tail, Moon settles back under his tree again, back turned to his annoying guests. The four dragon press right against his head, each with a toothy smile plastered to their bright faces. Moon rolls his golden eyes and closes them, ready to sleep, but a second later they flutter open when one of the younglings snuggles into his stomach. The green male with red wings looks up at him lovingly, resting his head on Moon’s belly.

With a sigh, Moon asks them what they want. Happy to have the attention back, Fireball chirps out the names of the remaining members: the white female is Prissy, the male with the clubbed tail is Steve and the one snuggled up to him is Tres. He briefly wonders what sort of name that is, until he glances down at the green dragon, who has a small stump where his left front foot should be. Now that he’s actually looking at them properly, it’s obvious they are all too young to be by themselves. They probably couldn’t even hunt yet.

He asks the ragtag group where their human companions are, which makes them all droop their heads sadly. It didn’t take a genius to know that they were gone.

Probably taken by war, like Derek. Such a waste of life.

With an irritable sigh, he realises why the younglings have taken such a shine to him. They needed someone to help them survive. Although the forest is generally safe, it only took one mean dragon to scar the little group for life.

For a minute he thinks about sending them away, until he looks down at Tres, clearly the youngest due to his tiny stature. The green dragon stares at him with hopeful crimson eyes, clutching his belly scales as if the older dragon would just disappear.

With a defeated sigh, Moon mumbles that the younglings can stay with him for a while. Four happy tails shoot up into the air and most of the group let out excitable yaps.

He supposed they could be his entertainment for a while.

***

Excited yips rouse Moon from his slumber. For a second he’s confused, until he remembers the younglings that he, quite literally, took under his wing yesterday.

Four excited faces stare back at him, their eyes sparkling in the sunlight. He looks up at their tiny faces, covered in beautiful colourful dotted markings from their human companions. Whenever a dragon is paired with a human, they inherit markings from that human that correspond to their element. Moon never did find out how, or why, these markings appeared with human companionship. But, he supposed he didn’t care when Derek was there to make him happy. Now that their humans are gone however, the markings will just be doomed to be unfinished mosaics.

The younglings complain about their empty bellies, prodding the large dragon on the snout. Moon rises to his feet with a stretch and casts his head around the clearing, breathing in the crisp morning air. The earth around his feet is damp and mushy from a light rain, and the green grass is covered in a layer of cool morning dew. Not the best time for hunting, but it would have to do.

Fireball chirps impatiently, wanting the older dragon to do something. Moon sweeps the younglings behind him with his tail and trots into the foliage, getting swallowed by the clumps of wet leaves and aromatic flowers. The younglings leap around his feet, tumbling and batting each other playfully. Moon smiles slightly as he watches the white female, Prissy, tackle Steve from behind and press his grey face into the thick sludge of forest mud.

A low growl up ahead makes Moon freeze in his tracks and spread his cream wings in an attack stance. In front of the ragtag group is a bulky navy blue dragon with one single sunny yellow eye. The dragon’s flank is covered in pink scars where the scales haven’t grown back, and the spikes on his tail are chipped and broken at different angles. A wave of fear ripples through Moon’s body, but he tries his hardest to ignore it when the younglings huddle around his legs. The strange dragon looks at each of the four younglings hungrily, licking his lips with a slimy grey tongue. Moon digs his claws into the earth, unsure of whether it would be wise to start a fight with the older dragon.

Before Moon has the chance to back away, the blue dragon leaps, claws outstretched. Left with no choice but to fight, Moon sweeps the younglings away with his tail and prepares himself as the battle-scarred dragon knocks him off his feet, sending him sprawling backwards in a scaly mess. With a harsh growl, Moon rolls to his feet, drenching himself in the heavy mud and opens his mouth wide in a roar, orange flames licking hungrily at the back of his throat. The other dragon just scoffs and plucks Steve off the ground with a dull claw. The grey youngling squeaks and manages to wriggle free, skulking into the bushes to safety.

Smoke rises from Moon’s nostrils like a chimney as a funnel of orange flames slam his opponent’s side, making him cry out in surprise. The black and cream dragon then jumps into the air, landing clumsily on the other dragon’s wing. He digs his claws in, smirking when the other dragon yelps in pain. The other dragon bellows and bucks him off, giving Moon only a second to catch his breath before the dragon barrels into him.

Hot breath that smells like rotten meat assaults his nostrils as the older dragon glares down at him with his one hate-filled yellow eye. Moon flattens his ears, unable to hide the waves of fear creeping through his body.

This dragon could kill him.

He only hoped that Derek would be on the other side, if there was one, to greet him.

The thought makes Moon relax slightly, knowing that his time in the world is up. At least he’ll have someone looking forward to seeing him. Slain in battle, as Derek once was.

Dribble escapes the dragon’s lips, his grey tongue darting between his chipped teeth, taunting Moon. Just when he prepares himself for the killing blow, a fireball strikes his opponent on the side of the head, tearing blue scales off his cheek. The dragon roars in a mixture of anger and shock and staggers off Moon, allowing him to crawl away. Much to his surprise, Fireball leaps onto Moon’s shoulders, spreading his bright yellow wings to threaten the other dragon.

Moon growls a warning as his opponent eyes each youngling up. The blue dragon scoffs and stumbles away, his cheek sizzling and inflamed from the heat of the attack. Once the other dragon wanders out of sight into the trees, Moon relaxes and lets out a breath he hadn’t realised he had been holding.

He’s alive.

Fireball bounces in front of Moon, a toothy grin on his face. The other younglings crowd around them, yapping about how cool the fight was and how brave they are. Moon chuckles and sits up, allowing the younglings to snuggle up to his feet.

Steve and Tres attempt to replicate the roars from the fight, but they only come out as tiny squeaks. Prissy looks up at him, her grassy green eyes filled with gratitude. Moon feels a wave of pride spread through him, he gave these younglings a fighting chance at surviving.

They need him.

They want to stay with him.

With Derek gone, company is always nice. Maybe he had grown bitter in his years alone. As he looks down at the younglings, his heart swells.

Moon asks the younglings with a low bark if they would like to stay with him permanently, and they all agree excitedly. The four of them start squeaking at each other, replicating his attack stance and battle moves.

Maybe looking after them could be his purpose.

That’s it for this week - I hope you enjoyed reading Purpose! See you next week.

Where to Buy Indie Books on a Budget

Hi all!

This week I'm going to show where you can buy indie, also known as self-published, books when you're on a budget! Libraries and charity shops are great for reading books on a budget but I've found that not many are willing to stock self-published books. It's easy to find traditionally published books in libraries and charity shops as people buy and donate them all the time. So, for those of who you who would love to support indie authors without breaking the bank, I'll show you where to find them!

Amazon Deals.

Amazon has loads of books that are on sale every day. They have perma-free books, which are free to download and Kindle Daily Deals. You can find books for £1 and 99p in the daily deals, which I frequent often to look for a good read! Perma-free and daily deals are pretty good for finding a new series, as the first book could be free or heavily discounted. Although Amazon is used a lot by self-published authors, a lot of traditionally published authors discount their books on Amazon as well.

BookBub.

BookBub is a service that sends out daily or weekly emails with deals on new books. You can choose from loads of genres and formats and they will let you know what books you may like. I get daily emails from them on Fantasy, Sci-Fi, YA and Horror books and I've bought loads of books this way. They have a variety of deals, from free to 99p and heavy discounts. You can also choose where you prefer to buy these books as well, including: Amazon, Kobo, Apple Books and Google. If you're not into ebooks then they also offer deals on audio and print books as well.

Hello Books.

I found Hello Books thanks to being a part of a few author groups on Facebook. They're relatively new and work like BookBub. You get weekly emails with books from each genre that you're subscribed to. I've signed up to their Fantasy, Sci-Fi and YA email lists. All of the books offered are free, 99p or heavily discounted. They currently don't have as many genres as BookBub do, but the books that I've bought thanks to them have been enjoyable. If you want a bit of variety, I'd recommend signing up to both BookBub and Hello Books to get a vast array of books that you may never have discovered.

IASFA.

The IASFA specialise in Sci-Fi and Fantasy books. They send out one email a month that contains a bundle of books with a specific theme. The books are then available to download for free during that time period and once the promotion is over they go back to their original price. There's also occasional book bundles that offer loads of books in one bundle for a set price that doesn't break the bank. I've downloaded from many of their bundles and have loved them! I browse through all of the monthly books, despite what the theme may be, just in case I find a book that I never thought I'd enjoy.

I hope that this post is helpful for readers who love to read but are on a budget! I use all of the above and can personally vouch that they are amazing and great for finding deals. That's it for this week, see you next week.

Multiple Points of View in my Books

Hi all,

This week I'm going to talk about POV (point of view) in my books. Although most of my books are focused on one character with an occasional change of view, I have written a few books where there are multiple main characters who each have chapters dedicated to their point of view. These can be different scenes or areas that other main characters aren't involved in or different views of the same scene.

Celestial Plague.

In this series, there are four main characters. Shannon Pennylove, Jenna Carlton, Ashleigh Warren and Raya Oovo. Each of them have multiple chapters in every book. They are cycled through every so often so one character doesn't get two chapters in a row. They each have different personalities and opinions of the world they live in. For example; Jenna is more cynical and pessimistic while Ashleigh is a lot more meek and less likely to dive into conflict.

In the books, their chapters will be differentiated by a different chapter header for each character. A bird for Shannon, a fish for Jenna, a panther for Raya and a sun for Ashleigh. The chapter headers are supposed to represent their powers as well, which will make it easier for readers to identify. I did consider just having their names under each chapter but I wanted an illustration as well. My newsletter subscribers voted on this as well and decided that they also wanted illustrations.

Curse of Anubis.

There are two main characters in this series: Tahira Kahana and Bastet. As she is a goddess, Bastet is mostly in her cat form throughout the books and engages with the other gods in their animal forms as well. Although other gods appear throughout the books, Bastet is the only one who has chapters dedicated to her. I've written a lot of cat characters in the past so I wasn't too worried about writing a book with half of it in a feline POV!

Like Celestial Plague, this series will also have illustrated chapter headers. Bastet's, of course, will be a cat while Tahira will have a leopard. Again, I didn't just want the names under each chapter, I wanted something visual to distinguish a change of POV.

Why chapter headers?

There were a few things that I considered before choosing chapter headers as the way to distinguish POV. The others were:

Character name below each chapter - This was my first option but I decided I wanted something that looked better.

Different symbols in each chapter with a key explaining which character was which - I thought that this option might get confusing, especially in the ebook version. Most of the time Amazon will immediately jump to chapter one while skipping the contents. I didn't want people flicking back and forth and getting confused while reading.

Naming each chapter after the character - So, instead of chapters 1,2,3 it would go: Ashleigh 1, Shannon 1, Ashleigh 2 etc. I also thought that this would get confusing and would also be a pain to format.

In the end, I decided that illustrations would look best. I read a lot of Warriors books that have chapter illustrations and loved them. So, I thought they would be a good idea for my books.

Will I write more books with multiple POVs in the future? Possibly. I don't want to rule it out. For now the books that I'm planning on writing are all one POV, with the occasional chapter seen through the eyes of a different character. Because these books only have one POV I won't be doing illustrated chapter headers for them.

That's it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week!

Solar Child - Excerpt

Hi all!

This week I thought I’d share a small extract from Solar Child, the prequel novella to Years. This can only be downloaded when you sign up to my mailing list, it’s not available on Amazon. You can also download the Elemental Dragons Short Story Collection and Famished.

Nova and her friends can only gape as an orange lioness slowly drops to the forest floor. Her entire body is surrounded by flame, but the lioness inside doesn't show any signs of distress. The four of them step back as the lioness flexes her paws before landing softly on the grass. Nova expects to see the greenery around her erupt into a blaze of fire, but nothing happens. Although the flames lick the tender stems, there is no sign of harm to them either.

What is this?

Nova tries to open her mouth to speak but nothing comes out. She takes a step back as the smell of ash fills her nostrils and steps on a twig.

Snap.

The lioness' head swings towards them. All four of them gasp and push her forward.

"What the hell-"

"You pissed it off!" One of her friends, Alesha, snaps.

"I stepped on a twig-"

The lioness steps towards her and all four of them jump back in shock. Nova feels Alesha's hand slip into hers. They press their backs against the closest tree, ignoring the scratchy bark and the hair that gets caught in it.

Every time the lioness moves a charred pawprint is left in the grass. But a second later the burned patch grows over with fresh grass that looked healthier than it did before.

"Please, don't be afraid."

The lioness' voice is silky and warm. Her yellow eyes blink up at them gently and she dips her head.

"It's an alien!" One of her other friends, Sofia, shrieks.

"Why would an alien come here?" Her last friend, Robyn, hisses.

The lioness cocks her head to one side, eyeing them all curiously. Nova stands up straighter and tries to control the nervous shake in her hands.

"Who are you?" The words come out as barely a whisper.

The lioness blinks at her kindly. "To be honest, I'm not sure. I have only just woken up from a deep slumber."

Robyn nudges her back. "Ask it what it wants."

"What I want, child," The lioness replies, making them all jump. "Is to find out what is going on with this formerly beautiful planet. It was a lush paradise when I left it. Now..." She looks around, her nose wrinkling. "It smells strange. Of something I can't identify."

Nova swallows back her fear. "I'm sorry, but I don't know what you're talking about. The planet has been the same from before we were born."

The lioness peers at her carefully. "You have known no different? From this?"

She shrugs. "It's not that bad. Is it?"

The lioness opens her mouth to reply when the sounds of sirens fill the forest. Nova and her friends all huddle together.

That’s it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading Solar Child! If you sign up to my mailing list you’ll be able to read the full story and two more. With each new standalone and series I publish there will be an enovella to go with it, so if you want more stories then make sure you sign up! See you next week.

Nirvana Cover Design

Hi all,

As promised - this week I’m revealing the cover for Celestial Plague #1: Nirvana. This will be my second series published and the first books that I’ll be publishing in the post-apocalyptic genre. There will be four books in this series, each with a different main character on. When the book is out for pre-order, I’ll update my website banners and theme.

Check out the cover here…

As with all of my other covers so far, this one has been designed by Deranged Doctor Design. They will also be designing the other three books in the series as well! As with previous books, I thought I’d explain some of the design choices.

  • The character on the cover is Shannon, one of the four main characters in the book.

  • Shannon has wings thanks to her power, though in the book they are grey and cream. I love the design choice that DDD went with though.

  • Shannon has a fear of flying, but still moves her wings when she’s nervous or stressed.

  • The fire is burning in a city that the characters end up travelling to and staying in.

  • I did think about having multiple characters on the cover but decided to give each character their own cover instead. Ashleigh will be next; on the cover of Celestial Plague #2: Heaven.

  • My initial colour scheme for this book was scrapped as I wasn’t sure if it would fit with the genre. I love the colours that DDD eventually went with.

  • All of Shannon’s clothes have wing zips, but the wings would cover them if they were included on the cover.

  • I did consider having someone infected with the virus added in, but I think it would have made the cover too crowded.

  • The font is similar to the one used for Elemental Dragons, which fits the genre for YA books.

Celestial Plague #1: Nirvana will be available for pre-order in August, with a release planned in October this year. I’ll post more blog posts about the Celestial Plague universe, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled…

That’s it for this week, I hope you love Nirvana’s cover as much as I do! See you next week.

Hawthorn and Ash Book 3: Alder & Ebony

Hi all,

One of my writing/publishing goals last year was to write more short stories and submit them to anthologies. One of the anthologies that accepted one of my stories has been published! You can check out Alder & Ebony below:

Alder and Ebony is a compilation of fantasy drabbles and flash fiction from authors worldwide.
Within its pages you will find enchanting stories of myth, legends and fairytales woven throughout.
Dive into the magic and wonder of these 50+ tales in Volume Three.

My story for this anthology is called Reclaim. It features the cat goddess Bastet, in her cat form, taking something back that was stolen from her. The piece was originally written for a contest that it unfortunately didn’t place in, but now you can read it in this anthology! The story doesn’t contain spoilers for the Curse of Anubis series and only features Bastet. You can get an idea of her character and her behaviour from this story, however.

The publisher is Iron Faerie Publishing and they have plenty of other submission calls on their website for various anthologies. My favourites are the fantasy and horror ones! You can check out their website and published anthologies here: Iron Faerie Publishing. I’ve submitted to one of their other anthologies and would also like to contribute to more of their anthologies in the future. They have great prompts and themes which are different to ones that you usually see for submission calls. Their Nephilim anthology is the one I originally submitted to as the theme was something I’d never come across before.

That’s it for this week, I hope you check out Alder & Ebony and Iron Faerie Publishing! Next week keep an eye out for the cover reveal of Celestial Plague #1: Nirvana… See you next week!

Characters in my Book Posters

Hi all,

This week I thought I’d talk about the characters that are portrayed in my book posters. I commission an artist to draw a character for the poster with each book I publish and I intend to keep doing it in the future!

Let’s start with Elemental Dragons:

Blood and Water - Aqueous

As Aqueous is the companion of the main character, Hazel, it only makes sense that he is the dragon on the poster! I also chose him because of the title - as he is an important water dragon in the books.

Venom and Earth - Winter

Art by - ivanterribly2

Winter is one of the main antagonist dragons in the series and I knew that she would be perfect for the poster of Venom and Earth. As an earth dragon, she fits the title and I couldn’t think of a better dragon to represent the book.

Glass and Ice - Damayanti

This book focuses more on Braith and her attachment to Draca and Hazel’s ‘natural’ element so I knew I wanted to use an ice dragon. Damayanti was the obvious choice. I also love her design so I wanted to see her in art form.

Cinder and Fire - Drea

Art by - toodlingart

Although Drea is a dual elemental there wasn’t another fire dragon that I wanted to use for this poster. She’s using her secondary element, fire, but her companion mostly uses fire so I thought it would make more sense for her to use that element. It turned out to be the right choice as I love how fierce she looks!

Mute - Original Wendigo

Although I could have used Hanne’s wendigo form for this poster I thought it would be best to use the wendigo that hunts the characters throughout the book. I also really wanted to see the design in art form as I love the branches sprouting out of its back!

Years - Mother Earth

Art by - chimerahh

Mother Earth was the only non-human choice that I had for this poster and I love how she turned out. She doesn’t appear in the book very much but she still has a deep impact on Cheyenne so to have her on the poster was the most fitting.

I would go into detail about what future posters would look like but I think that would spoil too much! I have already planned three out of four of the Celestial Plague posters, the first of which I’m hoping to get designed this month. As for other books, you’ll have to wait and see!

That’s it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week.

The Future of Street Rats

Hi all,

This week I’m going to talk about Street Rats! The book has been on hiatus since October 2021 and I thought I’d make a blog post explaining why.

If you aren’t aware, last August I asked my followers to vote on what standalone book they wanted me to write next. The winner was Street Rats. You can see a basic plot summary and genre here:

I started writing that book soon after. At first writing went well and I was really enjoying the story. I also enjoyed the fact that this book is set in a parallel world with different ideas of technology to ours. Instead of police they instead capture animals and experiment on them. These animals are often given robotic parts and have chips in their brains from which they receive orders. Of course, there’s a cat in in it who helps the main character, Hailey.

However, my mental health started to decline and I started losing passion for the project. I wanted to get it done in time for NaNoWriMo November 2021, where I was planning to start writing the first draft of Original Elementals #1: Frostbite. More and more days were passing by where I would get short bursts of writing done but then write nothing for days. The book was slowly coming together but I found I wasn’t happy with it at all.

November comes around and I’m just over 72K into the first draft. I decided to put it on hold to write Frostbite like I’d originally planned. I managed to finish the first draft of that book in early December.

However, Street Rats is still on hold.

I’m not happy with how the story turned out, but I still want to write the ending. I know it’s going to need some heavy editing which I’m not looking forward to. However, I still love the premise and I am willing to go back and finish it. My mental health has also improved a lot and I am more willing to finish the story than I was before. I think the fact that I was feeling low rubbed off on the story and I started getting frustrated with it.

Will Street Rats be finished?

The first draft - yes. After that I’m going to leave it for a while before attempting to go back to it to edit.

When will it be finished?

I’m not sure, whenever I feel ready. It could be after I’ve finished Camp NaNoWriMo this month, or it could be later on in the year.

Will it be published?

I want it to be. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to change the story enough to where I’m happy with it. I still want to see the story out there.

That’s it for this week! Next week keep an eye out for Years, which will be available on Amazon on Tuesday! See you next week.
